Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
